SKOPJE – On 5 March 2025, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport of North Macedonia, Mr Aleksandar Nikoloski, and Head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Office, Mr Fatih Turkmenoglu, signed and investment grant agreement for a joint railway border crossing in Tabanovce. By implementing this project, railway transport between North Macedonia and Serbia will be improved by lowering the waiting times at the crossing point.
The project, valued at €7.4 million, will enhance connectivity and streamline border procedures for trains traveling between North Macedonia and Serbia. It builds on the success of the “One Stop Shop” system already in place for road transport at the Tabanovce/Preševo border crossing. Once completed, the new system will significantly speed up freight movement and improve efficiency, with the potential to facilitate rail passenger services between Skopje and Belgrade in the future.
The financing includes €2.4 million in grant funding, €5 million in a soft loan from the EBRD, and €250,000 for consulting and supervision services.
The project will cover 10,100 square meters and is expected to be completed within two years, with the new border model fully operational by mid-2027.
