CHIȘINĂU – On 27 February 2025, the International Winter Academy on Sustainable Transport and Trade focuses on Maritime and Multimodal Transport, bringing together key industry experts and policymakers to discuss the future of sustainable transport and trade.

Co-organised by the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community, the Academy’s third day focuses on how digital innovation and green initiatives can reshape trade routes between the EU and Eastern Partnership countries.

The day features high-level discussions on port decarbonisation, maritime digitalisation, and multimodal transport, with contributions from leading ports, freight operators, and logistics experts across Europe.

Welcoming the participants, Director of the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community, Mr Matej Zakonjšek, said that maritime and multimodal transport only make sense when seamlessly connected within the Trans-European Transport Network. “Modern railways, modern ports, and modern multimodal terminals are the backbone of this vision. This is why we are here – to discuss and create a truly integrated network,” he pointed out.

The three panel discussions are focusing on maritime decarbonisation by exploring strategies for reducing emissions and making ports more sustainable, digitalisation in maritime trade by examining smart solutions that streamline port operations and cargo movement, and enhancing multimodal transport by discussing ways to integrate road, rail, and water transport for more efficient trade flows.

By fostering dialogue and sharing expertise, the Transport Community aims to drive forward policies that make trade and transport smarter, greener, and better connected across the region, aligned with the EU standards and part of the Trans-European Transport Network.

The International Winter Academy “Sustainable Transport and Trade” takes place on 25-28 February 2025. This four-day conference features dynamic overview presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and roundtables focused on advancements in digitalisation and green initiatives within customs operations, innovation within freight transport associations, and developments in the maritime sector. Throughout the International Winter Academy, participants gain valuable insights into the ongoing digitalisation efforts in customs operations, policy frameworks, and the technological innovations propelling the digital transformation of the trade and transport sectors.

The International Winter Academy is organised by the “Strengthening Sustainable and Digital Trade Routes and Logistics Concepts between Eastern Partnership Countries and with the EU” (EasTnT) project. The EasTnT (“Eastern Partnership for Trade and Transport”) project is funded by the Federal German Ministry for Economic Cooperation Development (BMZ) and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Activities within the events were financed under the grant NDICI-GEO-NEAR/2023/452688 to the Transport Community Permanent Secretariat related to preparatory activities to support the progressive involvement of Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine in the activities of the Transport Community.
